The effect of substrate concentration on the activity of the catalase enzymeA Level Biology ProjectObjectivesThis is an experiment to examine how the concentration of hydrogen peroxide substrate affects the reaction rate of the catalase enzyme.IntroductionThis is a genuine A-level school project and as such it is intended for educational or training purposes only. research. Excerpts from this project should not be included in projects you submit for grading. Doing this could lead to being disqualified from any subjects you take. You have been warned. If you want more help with your biology labs, take a look at “Advanced Labs for Biology” by Sally Morgan. If you want more detailed information on biology, I recommend the book “Advanced Biology” by Mr. Kent. They are used to speed up specific reactions in cells. They are all very specific because each enzyme only performs a particular reaction. Catalase is an enzyme found in foods like potatoes and liver. It is used to remove hydrogen peroxide from cells. Hydrogen peroxide is the toxic byproduct of metabolism. Catalase accelerates the breakdown of hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen, as shown in the equations below. Formula: CatalaseHydrogen peroxide------------------ --->Water + OxygenCatalase2H2O2- ------------------->2H2O+O2It is capable of accelerating the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide because the..... . middle of paper ......ental error involving any of the factors mentioned above. Extension work This experience could be improved in several ways. This could be repeated several times to help eliminate any abnormalities. A better overall result would be obtained by repeating the experiment several times, because any error in one experiment would have to be compensated for by the other experiments. Using more concentrations of hydrogen peroxide would have produced a nicer graph and I would have liked to use higher concentrations. by more than 20% to lengthen the graph to achieve the maximum possible reaction speed. The problem of the delay between pouring the hydrogen peroxide, capping the test tube and starting the timer could have been limited by having another person start the timer when the hydrogen peroxide was poured into the tube .Other biology projects
