Essay / Importance of sport and women's sport - 962
When asked in class, why do certain sports arouse more interest than others? I decided to take a more gender-specific approach to this question to try to find the answer to why men's sports are more popular than women's sports. Men are built in a more “masculine” way, which makes them better athletes overall. Although women's bodies were built to be more flexible and elegant for jumping on a dance floor or flipping over a balance beam, it is simply not common for women to be able to compete in the frame of a sport. This is seen in the common interest in women's gymnastics or volleyball in the Olympics, but more interest in men's athletics or swimming. Why is the public more attracted to the Super Bowl than to a cheerleading tournament? In the book, most Sporting reality shows on television make their storylines very dramatic to keep the audience engaged in the show and coming back to watch more. It’s the same with sports. If given the choice of watching men's or women's basketball, more people would likely choose men's basketball, as men tend to be more aggressive after a problem. Speaking of the biological differences between men and women, Hargreaves says: "The common assertion that men are naturally more aggressive, more competitive and therefore better at sport than women suggests that these are inherent conditions and therefore immutable” (146). With this quote, she proves that because men are more aggressive, they are better able to play the game. For example, when trying to defend his opponent in basketball, a man is more likely to commit a foul due to of the more aggressive nature in which he was raised. Women are more capable of being tossed into the air gracefully, which is necessary to be a cheerleader. . While men are faster and that is why watching a men's basketball game is more entertaining than watching a women's basketball game. Jennifer Hargreaves tells how, in the early 1920s, there was a popular demand to play women's football. Many clubs were formed and the game was enjoyed by both players and spectators until the Football Association stopped women's football stating: "football is absolutely not suitable for women and does not should not be encouraged” (142). This shows us that even when women were trying to play a game as fairly as possible to men, the game was stopped simply because of the way women are supposed to act. We now have flag football, which is the aggressive tackling and roughing game, as seen in men's football. The public would be more inclined to watch men's football because football should be played with tackling and aggression, where flag football cannot be played as aggressively.
