Essay / The Exaltation of Jesus - 2490
Study of the word “Highly exalted” (ὑπερύψωσεν) from the word ὑπερυψόω, is an aorist verb, active, indicative, used as a metaphor for the exaltation of Christ found in the epistle to the Philippians, chapter 2, verse 9. Little is recorded about this word, it has previously been used only sparingly in other Greek literature and contexts. Commentators suggest that the context of exaltation implies an understanding or connotation of kingship since the word is associated with "raising to supreme majesty" and "exalting the highest or being lifted up with pride". The word is thought to date from around 133 AD. These words were only used when a king or individual was exalted or glorified for all to see. This was not just sinful pride, but rather a display of glory. There is only one use of this word in the entire Bible. It is not found anywhere else in the Philippine Book except chapter 2, verse 9. However, the definition of the word has three different meanings. Biblical scholars understood the word to mean “exalting to the highest rank and power, exalted beyond measure to hold high.” Three of these definitions could be used to understand the type of status to which Jesus Christ was elevated in his resurrection. The Philippians will also share in the glory of Jesus Christ, unlike the temporary and superficial glory of the Roman Empire. Application Instead of a secular lifestyle that promotes the self, Christians must adopt a similar posture of faith. . As they themselves are the dwelling place of the Holy Spirit, this should lead them to adopt the same attitude as Jesus Christ. Christians must empty themselves and not fill themselves with pride while here on earth. We must live as humble servants and put others before ourselves. As we now embody the spirit within us and live according to the author and perfecter of our faith who
