Essay / Gender Roles: Then and Now - 1448 was favored over written language. This historical evidence is particularly apparent in literature from earlier periods. In these literary works, men and women often occupy very different social and economic positions within society. Duties, or particular tasks, are carried out depending on the sex of these individuals. However, in the changing world we currently live in, these duties are beginning to intertwine in an effort to enable equal rights between opposite sexes. This effort to break down the sexist barrier that surrounds our world has already begun to shake the chains of politicians and others. However, with the progress made thus far in retaliation against sexism and unequal privilege between the sexes, the United States of America is moving in a positive direction toward gender equality. However, the female gender is seen as a lesser entity in society while the male gender is dominant and controlling. Male individuals in literary works usually govern or direct female individuals. These characteristics are often evident in various literary works, including "Hills Like White Elephants" and "A&P" written by Ernest Hemingway and John Updike, respectively. The slow and steady transformation from a sexist society to one that allows the lower sexes to perform tasks similar or even identical to those of their higher counterparts can disrupt the ideological mindset of figures in authority; however, it provides opportunities for the lower sexes to diversify socially, economically, and politically. This growth and development will provide equal and diverse opportunities to disadvantaged people in society and around the world.
