Essay / The principles of cloning in biology
Cloning is the reproduction of organisms as an exact copy of an animal or possibly a human. Cloning has advantages and disadvantages. You can create a new social class but you can also eliminate diseases through cloning. Cloning is a lengthy process of DNA replication in animals. You must use a somatic cell from the organism it will reproduce. This is very different from sexual reproduction. People haven't cloned a human yet, but they've tried. However, they managed to clone some animals. DNA frequently has errors in human cloning, and mitochondria have their own DNA, which poses another problem. This is why humans have not yet been cloned. Cloning is a very complicated process that needs to be carefully considered before implementing it, as it has both advantages and disadvantages and can lead to many problems before solutions are found. When you create a clone, you are essentially creating an exact replica of someone or something. I know that recently a sheep was cloned. My subject is important to me because I believe that cloning is scientific and technological progress. I read a book about cloning in 6th grade called Double Identity and it was about cloning. Since then I found it really interesting and wanted to know how it was possible to do such a thing. My first question is: what are the advantages of cloning? “This creates mutations and faulty genes, but these could be eliminated by cloning healthy human cells” (Pros, 2013). If more of us were clones, we would have healthier cells and our lives could be longer. Diseases that kill humans could be eliminated. “From the professional athlete who tears their ACL to the person who becomes quadriplegic following a devastating car accident, recovery times could be reduced and true healing could occur through cloning their own cells to facilitate the recovery process” (Pros, 2013). We see so many athletes get injured and some even have to end their careers due to traumatic injuries. Perhaps cloning could put an end to it. These are some of the advantages of cloning. My second question is: what are the disadvantages of cloning? “It could also create new societal divisions, in which perfected clones could be treated differently from naturally created humans” (Pros, 2013). If cloning existed, many people would be treated differently and unfairly. There would be a new organization of social classes. This is just one of the downsides to the idea of cloning someone. Obviously, cloning also has disadvantages. My third question is: how do people clone animals? “Ultimately, the adult female gives birth to an animal that has the same genetic makeup as the animal that donated the somatic cell. This young animal is called a clone” (Animaux, 2015). In reproductive cloning, they take a somatic cell from an animal that they will copy. They take the DNA from that cell and the egg develops an early-stage embryo. This is implanted in the uterus of an adult female. Eventually, she gives birth to an animal with the same genetics as the animal that donated.
