Essay / The infinite power of ocean waves: wave power plants
By using the infinite power of ocean waves, infinite energy can be created. Wave power plants have a simple but practical way to harness the infinite energy provided by ocean waves. Although the development of harnessing this renewable energy source is still in its infancy, many predict that this neglected resource could be used around the world in the near future. Wave power plants are capable of harnessing renewable energy using ocean waves. There are several types of wave power plants, but most behave similarly. Most have a mechanical object that is affected by ocean waves. This mechanical object is then connected to some sort of generator, creating electrical energy. There are several popular wave power plants, including the Pelamis wave power converter. This wave plant is a large red and yellow snake-like object that simply sits on the surface of the ocean and generates energy from the waves. Pelamis wavy plants are red and yellow since these are the two easiest colors to see in the ocean. The snake-like structures generate energy each time ocean waves cause it to move in a wavy motion. These types of wave power plants are typically installed six miles from any coastline and are attached to the ocean floor with steel cables. Additionally, each plant is capable of generating enough electrical energy to power 500 homes (“Pelamis Technology,” nd). Another type of wave power plant is the Searaser. Searasers simply use a large metal buoy that moves up and down in the waves. As the metal buoy floats up and down with the tide, electricity is generated and stored. Searasers are normally located quite close to the shore. The reason is that Searasers do not store the electricity they...... middle of paper...... a resource. The power of the ocean is something humans have known for centuries. However, the idea of using ocean energy to provide energy to large numbers of people around the world should be thoroughly researched. The United States must take advantage of this wonderful energy resource. Ocean energy is something that many people don't think of when the idea of a renewable energy source arises. If the right amount of research is done and the necessary time is dedicated to implementing wave energy as an energy source. Then I am sure that if wave energy was implemented correctly, hundreds of thousands of people could benefit from it. Wave energy companies would be created, as would thousands of jobs. Not to mention that this would not only be a step, but a step in the right direction when it comes to creating a greener earth..
