Essay / The Sandy Hook Elementary School Shooting - 2011
On December 14, 2012, just 11 days before Christmas, a terrible tragedy occurred in Newtown, Connecticut. Twenty-six people were shot at Sandy Hook Elementary School. This horrific event left many unanswered questions and rumors about that day. The reason is that the shooter committed suicide after shooting twenty young children and six adults. This tragedy opens everyone’s eyes; made you want to hug your loved ones a little tighter, appreciate what you still have, and never take a day for granted. Even our President Barack Obama felt the pain of all those who lost loved ones during this event. He assured everyone that he would do everything in his power to ensure that such a tragedy never happens again. However, did you know that there have been more than 44 school shootings since the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting tragedy? I know that as a future teacher and mother, I want to make sure my children are safe in this world and even at school. I want to be able to make a difference in this problem and have some knowledge to be able to do so. Society should understand what really happened during the Sandy Hook event, the reasons why school shootings and violence are rapidly increasing every year, and have some knowledge of what we as society, can do to help so that we begin to see a decrease in these events. “Mom, I'm fine, but all my friends are dead. » Just imagine your first grader saying these words to you. 700 students were present that day. Most parents whose children attended Sandy Hook Elementary School received that phone call on December 14, although twenty parents did not receive good news, nor did Nacy Lanza. She wasn't so lucky with her child, 20-year-old Adma Lanza. ...... middle of paper ...... we can finally put some of the missing pieces of the puzzle together. Like Adam Lanza's motivations for the shooting and why he targeted children. Also with a little knowledge about how school shootings/violence are increasing every day. We see that most of these shootings always have the same motives: harassment. Understanding the characteristics of shooters and the causes of most school violence and shootings can help us look for signs and hopefully stop tragedy before it happens. As a future teacher, I know what types of signs to look for in my students or people in general to help them before an event like Sandy Hook happens again. Hopefully the government will come to a complete choice regarding gun laws and we can start to see some sort of difference on their side. However, more focus is needed on this issue for us to start seeing a decrease.
