The right people, with the right skills, go hand in hand with effective leadership. Only special types of leaders can inspire their followers to commit to difficult missions when it seems impossible. They carry a combination of characteristics that help inspire greatness. Two leadership styles that are often confused due to their similar styles are visionary leadership and charismatic leadership. Visionary leadership can be defined as: “The ability to create and articulate a realistic, credible and compelling vision of the future that improves on the current situation. (Google). The first responsibility is to present the vision. They serve the merchandise as a whole. A visionary leader can effectively verbalize their dreams and goals. This helps others see the leader’s vision. These leaders also take risks and work with their imagination and insight. Most importantly, these types of leaders are strategic planners. They are social innovators and change agents, who see the big picture and think strategically. (McLaughlin) They are able to see the future. They are able to imagine what the organization will look like and work in the future. (Patrick) Visionary leaders are able to create an environment in which they transmit their energy to others, giving them a sense of hope. They focus more on win/win philosophy than win/lose philosophy. They tend to be more proactive than reactive. We live in a world where leaders enrich themselves at the expense of citizens, where leaders live for selfish reasons, or even where leaders send others to fight in their name while remaining safe.
