  • Essay / Multitasking can hurt productivity

It seems that, at least in recent years, brain research has become a hot topic in scientific explorations, especially multitasking. Multitasking has become increasingly important in modern life because we live in a fast-paced world and people need to complete all the tasks they need to in a limited time interval. In such a stressful life, it seems that multitasking is always beneficial if people need to find ways to accomplish all their tasks. However, can multitasking still save us from tons of tasks we are tasked with completing? Unfortunately, according to some results of several authoritative methodical researches, efficiency cannot always be guaranteed by multitasking and sometimes multitasking can even negatively influence people's productivity on their tasks. At this point, we may wonder why sometimes multitasking can negatively influence people's projects. To get the answer to this question, we need to look at how multitasking works in our brain system. Several researches have been carried out to study this topic, and as a pioneer, the UCLA psychology department has gained some achievements on this topic. In an article entitled Multi-tasking Adversely Affects Brain's Learning, published in the UCLA Psychologists' Report, UCLA specialists demonstrated this fact using an experiment. The experiment was conducted by “functional magnetic resonance imaging (FMRI)” () to show brain exercise. During the experiment, participants were asked to make predictions about the shape of the cards. The cards were divided into two different groups. With one set of cards they learned without interruption while with another set of cards they multi-tasked, which refers to listening to trouble... in the middle of a sheet of paper. ..... functioning of different parts of our brains while we can be harmed if we lose concentration on our homework or use technology too much in our studies. Nonetheless, our own attitudes toward multitasking determine the role it plays in our own lives. What we should do to increase the effectiveness of multitasking is to learn how to determine the right time to use it with the help of various scientific research results and discover our own methods to avoid the disadvantages of multitasking.
