  • Essay / Analysis of the Adderall Epidemic - 1546

Whether it's studying intensively for a test or staying up all night to complete an assignment they were given three weeks ago, some students turn to studying enhancement drugs such as Adderall for help. Since Adderall is a study-enhancing drug, many of these students focus only on the fact that it might help them with their schoolwork. They do not consider that non-medical use of Adderall could lead to increased heart rate, dependence on the drug, cardiac arrest, and in some cases legal consequences. Despite the dangers of using the drug without medical purposes, about a third of college students admit to using Adderall to try to help them with their homework (Journal of American College Health). Some wonder if this percentage is high because campus clinics do not thoroughly test their patients before prescribing them. Although many doctors and clinics choose to use the suggested medical procedure to diagnose a student with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, it is not required by law. Testing a patient for ADHD “is an often expensive” and time-consuming process that some medical practices are unwilling to undertake (Pennino). These practices use alternative methods, such as questionnaires and surveys, to diagnose their patients. The use of these methods should be discontinued to make a prescription for Adderall more difficult for patients to obtain. Instead, all medical practices should be required to go through a specific set of procedures, similar to those suggested by the American Psychiatric Association, before diagnosing a student with ADHD or ADD. The American Psychiatric Association states that doctors should ensure that "six (or more) of the following symptoms have persisted for the middle of the article......cal Adderall Use Among Full-Time College Students .
