Essay / Reflections from OMDE 670, - 1319
This was the most important course in the master's program for students, especially for me. This marks great achievements and growth in the subject and signals a beginning of practice in the field. This course was also the most difficult because it did not incorporate much of Wedemeyer's theory of empathy. During my research, Mills, R. (2004) put this into perspective, arguing (paraphrased) that learning does not have to be difficult because one is at the graduate level. There is no need to overcome obstacles to succeed or reach the finish line. This was one of those courses – very stressful – for this learner, and therefore my goal in learning will always be to incorporate the concepts from OMDE 608, Learner Supports in Teaching and distance learning, incorporating just enough technology to provide support to the learner. From the beginning of my online learning journey, my concern with this mode of delivery was how to meet students where they are when learning takes place in different spaces and times. Holmberg (2009) also put this into perspective by stating, “Helping students learn is the most important task of any educator...which must be considered at the planning stage” (p. 46). My experiences as a second participant in this course left me feeling that I had accomplished very little; therefore, I continued to struggle with course expectations and requirements. Instead of working to bring many tasks up to expectations, I returned to the course with many of the same errors or misdirections. This was partly due to the nature of the comments received. I have submitted documents that never received any comments and no explanation as to why or comments that were unclear. In several cases, feedback was received inappropriately, causing frustrations due to middle of paper......there are more W/Cs and perhaps technical assistants providing support to learners other than 'with technology. Too many assignments overlapped regarding due dates, the additional materials would help meet time constraints, which is not the concept learned in my studies: no place or time constraints. Personally, I would have liked to see the course staffed with more tutors for students or the integration of different types of technology to help students with the writing and research process, for example writing software that provides more as plagiarism checks. Since online or distance learning is about the integration of technologies, as learned in OMDE 608, technologies should be used to provide a more inclusive learning experience. The course was an educational experience, helping me to appreciate more the conventional or blended mode of learning. THANKS.
