Essay / The causes, effects and previous solutions to lack of sleep
Sleep is a time when a person can take time to relax and repair their mind and body. It is linked to having a healthy and stable life. The quality, duration, and regularity of sleep determine whether a person has healthy or poor sleep habits. Bad sleep habits have many causes and consequences that affect the person. On average, a person needs to sleep eight to ten hours a day. Most people with poor sleep habits suffer from lack of sleep, which is a dangerous sleep habit. This means that people sleep too little, which then affects them negatively. This article aims to explain the causes, effects and previous solutions to sleep deprivation, a poor sleep habit. (2015) stated that one of the most common reasons for poor sleep habits is modern technology. Cell phones, laptops and video games have a significant negative effect on sleep. Due to overstimulation and extreme exposure to light, a person is pushed away from sleep. People tend to spend hours doing nothing on their phones and lose track of time. Others might put on a movie to fall asleep, only to find themselves watching even more movies. People don't feel the impact until they wake up, but they find themselves repeating the cycle daily. Being sleep deprived after “gaming” online all night is a common occurrence among human beings. This usually happens because melatonin, the hormone responsible for sleep, is restricted by the blue light omitted from screens. Another cause of poor sleep habits is the excessive demands that exist in a person's professional life. When a student has too much homework to do, they tend to stay up all night to complete their assignment to avoid getting bad grades. The student compromises and sacrifices sleep to do homework, study for a given quiz on short notice, or work on a difficult project. On the other hand, work obligations can also be a cause of sleep deprivation, where a person may stay almost at work. In both cases, priority is given to professional and personal life, causing the person to suffer the consequences of poor sleep. The effects of poor sleep habits, or lack of sleep, can be classified into several groups: physical, psychological or physiological. The first effect is a psychological effect which gains weight. This happens because lack of sleep has been proven to cause greater hunger, which is due to two hormonal changes. First, lack of sleep leads to increased levels of ghrelin, the hormone responsible for hunger. Second, the hormone that causes satiety, leptin, decreases due to lack of sleep. Adding these two factors together, people tend to eat more and gain weight. Therefore, this can eventually lead to obesity. The second consequence of having poor sleep habits is forgetfulness and distraction. When a person lacks sleep, they suffer from frequent forgetfulness..
