    Because of this refusal, it is not safe for him to live alone without a caregiver. Additionally, during a conversation with the client it is often difficult to understand what they are trying to communicate because they are not speaking very clearly, this will be seen as a limitation as they cannot communicate their needs; the caregiver must use judgment to assess their needs. However, dementia is not often diagnosed in the early 50s, so if this client had shown this type of behavior at age 70, it would more likely be considered normal. This is why you need to stay self-aware. Walsh defines self-awareness as a process in which social workers continually monitor how they think, feel, and behave in the workplace, and how these activities relate to their lives in general (Walsh, 2009). Staying self-aware is a skill I practice daily. I am constantly reminded that even though I have an internship working with palliative care patients, I must take advantage of this opportunity to expand my knowledge.
