  • Essay / Summary of “The Pleasure of Eating” by Wendell Berry

The Pleasure of EatingWendell Berry, environmental activist, cultural critic and farmer, advises consumers to eat “responsibly”. Let consumers realize that eating is an agricultural act. An act that gives us freedom. This means that every time we make choices about what we eat and who we buy from, we are deciding in which direction our food system is moving. Berry says that to make change, we must make individual choices in order to live free. “We cannot be free if our food sources are controlled by someone else” (2). Berry maintains that the average consumer buys whatever food is available without question. Whether we rely on commercial suppliers, we are influenced by the advertisements we see on television which interfere with our food choices. We buy what others want us to buy. We have been controlled by the food industry and view eating as something necessary for our survival. Berry wants consumers to understand that we should enjoy eating and that it can only happen. He doesn't want to eat something that is treated cruelly. He wants us to eat fresh, healthy foods. The main point of his article is that people take their meals for granted and have no idea about the process that farmers go through to make our lives easier and our stomachs happy. I will pay more attention to the food I eat and prepare to grow a garden of fresh and healthy vegetables and fruits on my
