  • Essay / Examples of Professional Values in Nursing - 2050

When I decided to become a nurse, I had no idea what I was actually getting into. I started nursing school at a later age than most nursing students, past and present. I chose to continue being a student and become a registered nurse, after earning a Bachelor of Arts in Fashion at a private school in downtown Los Angeles. Even though I have a passion for fashion, I didn't think at that time that fashion would be enough for me, I wanted more. I remember taking a required pre-nursing class and a review of core professional values in nursing was a topic covered. Professional values in nursing are what affirmed my journey to becoming a registered nurse. The Core Professional Values of Nursing (CPNV) include five broad categories: altruism, autonomy, human dignity, integrity, and social justice (Shaw and Degazon, 2008, p. 44-50). I found the CPNV to be a sort of guide to nursing culture and profession for me. These five core values are imperative for the nursing profession, for all nursing students and current nurses. I often use CPNVs in my current practice, independently. I think that every healthcare establishment should include CPNV in its code of conduct. My current employer, Saint-Joseph Hospital in Orange, includes CPNV in its mission statement. Every individual is raised with a certain type of subjective values, these values are based on a culturally derived belief system, which has nothing to do with any profession. or a career. CPNV is similar to sociology, only from the professional point of view of the nurse, of a shared culture, of an understanding between all nurses. Altruism is the first major topic of CPNV, it is also known for an individual...... middle of paper ......it's worth it. I enjoy my job and it's my career, I hope for another two or three decades. I hold the core professional values of nursing close to my heart, as it is what has guided me on this nursing journey throughout my life. The five major values: altruism, autonomy, human dignity, integrity and social justice have been used almost daily in my nursing practice and in my art. I know I could always learn more and practice to become a better nurse, because I will never be at an optimal level. I enjoy the daily challenges I face during each twelve and a half hour shift I work. I strongly believe that these values should be included in our code of conduct and will mention this at a unit council in the hope that they will be recognized and added. CPNVs have taught me a lot and also guided me to treat my patients with respect, human dignity and equality as every human being deserves..
