Essay / Riot Grrrl Movement - 2282
In order to understand the topic that is to be addressed in this essay, one must first understand two seemingly unrelated topics. These topics are feminism and punk rock. These two social movements gave birth to the love child known as the riot grrrl movement. The history of the riot grrrl movement is deep and intensely intertwined with themes of monumental social change, musical evolution, and the overall novel nature of third-wave feminism. Many historians educated on the subject are of the opinion that the feminist wave first arose in the 18th century with Mary Wollstonecraft's publication Vindication of the Rights of Women (1792) and ended after the ratification of the 19th amendment to the U.S. Constitution in 1920. (nypl.org/blogs/subject/first-wave-feminism.) "the traditional role of women" cannot be strengthened. And perhaps most importantly, the third wave feminist movement works in solidarity with other ongoing social movements, such as GLBTQ rights, immigrant rights, and many others. (Turner, 25-33.) Feminism has changed dramatically throughout history, although with the introduction of punk rock and then riot grrrl, the 80s and 90s found themselves making social changes until then unexplored in radically new ways. The face of modern feminism and the beginning of what would become the third wave of the feminist movement was sculpted through anti-riot efforts in the 1980s and 1990s, and although this is often overlooked historically, even when studying or teaches feminism, it is vitally important because it could very well change the outcome of the ever-evolving and ongoing women's liberation movement..
