  • Essay / Hip Hop Culture - 1337

Hip-Hop culture is often confused with the Hip-Hop genre. Hip-hop as a culture is more than music, it is a way of life. Hip-hop music as a genre has evolved from rap to pop. Hip-hop is an evolving culture, constantly evolving as the old generation passes away and the new generation continues the legacy while incorporating their new style. The new generation of Hip-Hop or rather Hip-Hop today focuses more on partying, music and Swag rather than the original elements: Deejaying, Emceeing, Graffiti and B-Boy or break dancing. These elements are still present in hip-hop today but have adapted a new style. Hip-hop was started in the early 1970s by Clive Campbell, known as DJ Kool Herc, in the Bronx, New York. He was born in Jamaica and moved to New York when he was 12. His style had a great influence on reggae due to his Jamaican heritage. “Hip-hop started when my dad bought a sound system and didn't know how to hook it up. I was having fun with music and I started by buying a few records to play at home” (DJ Kool Herc). Kool Herc began playing his records at parties and would "call your name on the mic", a style used by Jamaican DJs called toasting, which is a shout he would do to all his friends. That led to him animating what we did. calls rap today. Kool Herc is known as the father of hip-hop because he started the movement. Afrika Bambaataa, known as the Godfather of Hip-Hop, also known for christening the culture Hip-Hop, continued Herc's legacy with another well-known DJ, Grandmaster Flash. Bambaataa and Flash were rivals because they were on different crews. At the time we called crews gangs, today we say crew when we talk about a group of friends or a group of ...... middle of paper ......m connection. Hip-hop is a lifestyle that is often misinterpreted by those who are not aware of what it fully encompasses and differs from "normal" because it is present in the media and everywhere. Today's hip-hop generation is partying, listening to rap music and representing their Swag.Works Quoted "Afrika Bambaataa | Hiphop.sh." Hiphop.sh | The four elements that shaped a movement. Internet.
