Essay / Lucky Chance - 647
DH Lawrence and Graham Greene are both very exceptional writers of the 20th century. However, there was one text that stood out to me the most. In DH Lawrence's text, The Rocking-Horse Winner, the story is structured. There is certainly a large separation between the upper classes and the lower classes. Throughout the text, there are excellent examples of how one can try to fit in with the upper class, by literally trying everything they can, even if it could possibly harm them. This story, Lawrence's The Rocking-Horse Winner, surprised me more than Greene's A Shocking Accident. The reason is that not only could I relate to this story, but in some way I feel like I could be Paul; however, the reason I chose this story that surprised me was the very end with the mother's son dead, where he was trying to ride his rocking horse to find a winner. Throughout The Rocking-Horse Winner, there is a mention of luck. . Luck between a person can be both good and bad. Whether you were born with it or not, it should never bring you down. In Lawrence's The Rocking-Horse Winner, the mother says, "It's because your father is unlucky." (Prentice Hall literature [page 148]). Unfortunately, in my situation, I'm asking for an intriguing observation from someone who is down on their luck. Luck is simply not something one is born with, but it should be viewed as something one must earn. If linked to respect, luck may simply represent many things among human values; However, no one is good at this, whether you are lucky or unlucky. That said, it was something that got my thoughts thinking, but as I continued reading, there were more and more that didn't seem quite right. Second, in the text The Rocking Horse...... middle of paper ...an environment in which neither parent can truly provide for their children is completely wrong. In my opinion, you have to start at the bottom and work your way to the top. Even though the lower classes aren't all tall, we end up agreeing. In the text The Rocking-Horse Winner by Lawrence, there is also a lot of meaning to this thing called luck; However, as previously stated, luck is not simply something one is born with. In fact, it's quite the opposite. If only this was something that could be fixed in the story, but probably not, there could be so much to see. It's almost as if abuse could be involved, which is why this story was not only a text that questioned parenting and children's views of it, but it also opened up a whole new series questions about parenting in general. 2
