“Overcoming Times and Distances” America is known as the land of opportunity with all its inventions like the railroad, the telegraph and the electric light bulb. All with their own extraordinary story with their ups and downs, but they were completed thanks to people's belief in the "American Dream". The phone mentioned in this text is no exception. “Time and Distance Overcome,” from 2008, written by Eula Biss, describes the challenges the telephone faced in its early and middle years: the American people as opposition and involving lynching and burning of black men. The establishment of the telephone was not without its difficulties, and it was not until the middle of the 19th century that brighter days began to appear for the telephone. The composition of the essay is like a timeline that illuminates important events in the history of the telephone. Each event has its own section, just like it has its own importance for the development and installation of the phone. These sections are divided into three parts; the invention of the telephone, complications with civilians and racism, then the author, Eula Biss, takes a look at her own relationship with the telephone. These sections or events are sometimes commented on or summarized by a small section, no more than a few lines: “Even now, it is an impossible idea, that we are all connected, all of us. » (Page 1, line 9) This section comments on the section written before this one and says that even today, after the development of technology, the telephone is still considered an invention and an impossible idea. As the trial progresses, the events take on greater importance and severity. It begins with an overview of the immediate pivot point, progresses to...... middle of paper ...... the images along the roads were magnificent. (Page 5, lines 138-139) But as he grew up, he soon realized that the phone had a dark and terrifying background, something he never imagined. But complications were fought off and, over time and distance, Graham Bell succeeded. Eula Biss' intention was to give an example of the phrase "Time and Distance Overcome". He wants people to believe that problems aren't here to stay, they're there to be solved, and that's exactly what happened with the phone; he overcame his problems with American citizens and his non-deliberate association with racism. He also lived the American dream himself, hearing the story of his grandfather, and how he was a helpful and opportunistic worker who believed it was possible to connect an entire country into one with determination and labor..
