In the absence of a safe legal measure for termination of pregnancy, women opt for unsafe abortions and such unsafe abortions can lead to complications in the body of the woman, or even lead to her death. Unsafe abortions often occur where abortion is illegal. Unsafe abortion is the termination of a pregnancy by persons lacking the necessary skills, or in an environment lacking minimum medical standards, or both. This can be an extremely dangerous, potentially life-threatening, self-induced procedure under unsanitary conditions. Unsafe abortion is a significant cause of maternal morality and harm worldwide. Most unsafe abortions take place in countries where abortion is illegal or in the majority of developing countries where well-trained doctors are not readily available. The World Health Organization (WHO) released an estimate in 2003 that approximately 42 million pregnancies were terminated, of which 20 million were unsafe abortions. An estimated 60,000 women die from complications related to unsafe abortion, infection or damage to internal organs.
