Essay / Thematic Concerns in "Moulin Rouge" - 839
"Moulin Rouge," the outrageous and over-the-top film co-written by Baz Luhrmann, is set in the 1900s, a time when the upper and lower classes were largely divided. Although the beginning of the film begins in black and white, it quickly becomes splashed with color and excitement. The main characters Cristian and Satine become the main attraction of the film when forbidden love blossoms. “Moulin Rouge” embodies the theme of forbidden love of two people from two completely different worlds, and two very different perspectives on love and the obstacles that come with it. Cristian, a yet-to-be-successful British writer, and Satine, a popular prostitute and star of "Spectacular! Spectacular!" were opposites who attracted each other after a fake first meeting. The Duke, a rich and powerful man with a title that Satine so desired, is mistaken for Cristian when Satine takes him to the elephant's magnificent room and she learns that he is a poor writer who left his bourgeois father for to pursue her dreams and that Satine's true colors show when she falls in love with the man she thought was the Duke. But when she discovers that Cristian is not who she initially thought, she makes it known that she is hungry for money. She makes it clear that money trumps love in her moral compass. Cristian, for his part, is unaware that she is a prostitute and falls deeply in love with her. From the start, the love between the young writer and the burlesque dancer is complicated and frowned upon. Forbidden love is the most intense and explosive love because the heart wants what it cannot have. The love between Cristian and Satine was doomed from the moment it began. Cristian and Satine's constant struggle concerns their role in society. Upperclassmen and lowerclassmen were... middle of paper...... emotions. With obstacles and power struggles, the love between Christian and Satine is doubtful. Love eventually takes over and materialistic things seem to fade away in the presence of the two lovers. The film creates a contrast between the right way to look for love and the wrong way. Forbidden love is unstoppable and Cristian and Satine embody it. Even death could not break the bond they shared. The power struggle between upper and lower classes and the naive and cynical view of love are the most important themes of this film and will forever be a spectacular and unique showcase of love.Moulin Rouge.
