  • Essay / Enrique's Journey - 1227

The main events of the story take place in Honduras and Mexico. Tegucigalpa, Honduras is where Enrique was born and raised by several family members. In Tegucigalpa, Enrique is dragged from house to house simply because he is unable to control his emotions. This makes Enrique angry and he begins to rebel against the people he lives with. At the age of 17, Enrique decided to leave his family in Honduras and travel to the United States in hopes of finding his mother. His journey will take him through Chiapas, Mexico, the most hostile city at the point of his journey. In Chiapas, corrupt Mexican police and gangs arrest migrants and order them to give up everything they own. Enrique was beaten and thrown from a train in Chiapas by gang members who attacked the train. After being thrown from the train, Enrique realizes that the journey will not be as easy as he had dreamed. The second most hostile city on the trip, Oaxaca is where many migrants are deported. The people of Oaxaca have a very distinct way of speaking and behaving. In Oaxaca, Enrique remains on guard, wondering if he will be deported because of his awkward dress and dialect. The last significant location in the story is Nuevo Laredo, Mexico. Nuevo Laredo is the last stop for immigrants traveling to the United States. From Nuevo Laredo, immigrants will enter Texas illegally and begin their struggle for financial success in America. Enrique finally enters Texas after being pushed onto a boat from Nuevo Laredo. Once he enters Texas, Enrique takes a taxi to North Carolina in the hope of finding his mother. Sonia Nazario begins the story by describing Enrique's confusion as to why his mother left him. He doesn't understand that she can't afford food and... middle of paper... risks such as missing limbs, rape, and deportation while traveling on board trains to the United States. They persevere in these struggles simply to provide for their families. I believe the risks migrants are willing to take to keep their families happy and healthy are courageous and beyond reproach. Mothers, fathers, brothers and sisters who travel to the United States leave their country, their language and their people behind in hopes of being able to build a life for their family and leave the crime, danger and unemployment of their hearth. country forever. In my opinion, the main idea of the story is one that should be shared with people of all nationalities and ethnic backgrounds. The main idea and theme of this story shows the importance of family and how hard people are willing to work to maintain happiness and peace within their home..
