  • Essay / Consumers: The Power Behind Government - 936

Consumers have more power than they think. Consumers are citizens who purchase goods or services from a selected business. They are the reason and purpose of a business. If a business didn't have consumers, there would be no point in creating one. Consumers are the driving force of a mixed economy, which includes capitalism and socialism. Both of these require engaged consumers. Consumers are those who spend money, time, and expertise to improve or receive a company's product. Consumers include not only buyers, but also students, workers and bosses. Anyone who buys or consumes something like money or goods is considered a consumer. Consumers play a vital role in the supply and demand process, as well as innovation. Many consumers shop and don't understand the gravity of a simple decision they are making. Many customers may even feel defeated by the prices, without knowing that they are the ones who determine the prices. Rosa Parks, although she was better known as a civil rights activist, was a consumer of the bus she rode. She paid to take the bus every day and had to go to the back. Sometimes shopping can be compared to the demands of a bus and people with general problems stop shopping. Rosa Parks initiated a boycott, which decreased the company's funds as demand for buses was lower, due to the circumstances. Soon the bus companies came to their senses and realized that they could not continue without allowing black people to ride the bus, and so they were eventually integrated. Black people could sit wherever they wanted and production continued. This example shows how powerful people can be if they can step aside and sacrifice themselves. Consumers determine the demand for a product. If customers don't want or need a pro...... middle of paper...... different results. Whether a consumer is a student, teacher, or employee, they all play a vital role in the world we live in today. Consumers are extremely powerful and have many advantages that they can sometimes take for granted. If people didn't use a company's goods or services, there would be no need to produce anything. A boss's main priority is to attract and retain customers. Consumers provide that. Many may not complain or let go of the problems they have, but if they take the opportunity to see what they can actually accomplish, they will eventually see a change. Consumers are responsible for purchasing goods and, without it, a government would crush them. Consumers really have more power than they think.Works CitedAdmin. “Mixed Economy .org.” Org. mixed economy. Mantra & Wordpress, June 9, 2011. Web. March 2. 2014. .
