Essay / The Solution to Religious Violence - 825
The world is full of terrible manifestations of violence and people in today's society cannot escape it. All that is on the news is either a religious group burning down churches or claiming responsibility for the latest suicide bombing. One case of religious violence that will never be forgotten is the attacks on the Pentagon and the Twin Towers. The United States has been at war for over a decade because of these religious attacks. The government does not seem to understand religious violence and religious groups do not like the government. Humanity has lost the ability to interact with each other. Individuals are too focused on themselves and convert everyone else to what they believe. People all over the world are fighting for their religious beliefs. The news does not have to be filled with campaigns of terror and violence, but with tolerance. Tolerance could cure religious violence. The only way to stop the killing of innocent lives in the name of God is to learn tolerance. The first thing we must learn is tolerance towards each other. Each religious group has different beliefs and society must accept their different views of God(s), even if they disagree. Society must recognize and support the rights and freedom of individuals according to their own beliefs and practices, without oppression or discrimination. Second, humanity must learn to understand. You must truly understand the cultural and religious significance of violence before you can achieve peace. The solution may never be found until we know more about the groups committing these acts of terrorism. In his book Terror in the Mind of God, Juergensmyer approaches the issue of addressing religious violence in a slightly different way. In the Juer book...... middle of paper ...... simply state it and move on to its conclusion. Knowing more about the importance of football in the Middle East might have provided a better understanding of why he put this in the book. His five different solutions showed what was done in the pass and how ineffective the solutions were. His fifth solution seems to be the most promising, but it will work one day. Will the problem be solved with the only solution proposed by Juergensmeyer? Once people understand and begin to appreciate religion and politics, peace will come. We shared a very similar view on the solution to religious violence, but perhaps a combination of understanding and tolerance would be more effective in solving the problem.
