  • Essay / Fiddler on the Roof - 904

The piece I chose was Fiddler on the Roof because it has a lot of value to me and is also enjoyable. I believe Fiddler on the Roof contains a multitude of genres within the three-hour plays; it is a romantic and comedic musical comedy. Not only that, but it has a deep meaning, so I guess you could say it's a musical drama. Throughout the play/film, the musical style of the film represented not only Eastern European music, but artistic styles as well. The humor, musical style and pathos represented their way of life; Based on different European cultures such as Hungarian, Romanian and Russian folk music, the film was also mixed with the romantic style of Jewish culture and folk music of that era. The theme of this piece can be seen as a doina which is the Romanian aspect as well as a plaintive instrumental solo which later becomes a larger work. The aspect that this play would fall under in the drama book/chapter four would be suspense being that the play is a musical drama; it keeps you in suspense throughout this work. During the bottle scene of the play we witness the interaction of two worlds during a wedding celebration, the music used in the scene demonstrated the level of suspense. At first, the music started as a bit sentimental, then led into an immediate somber and pragmatic melody. One would assume they did this for some purpose, but it was presented as a climatic issue in order to incorporate the different Eastern European sounds coming together. It was sort of an organized response. The director of this play showed this particular scene and emphasized it so much to illustrate the value and significance of not only Jewish culture, but also its connection to...... middle of paper ... ...I will get married under an awning. Because certain traditions are important, you can rewrite them, bend them; make them work for you, but you'll take some of them with you. We all write and rewrite lore every day, whether we do it with thoughtful, self-aware voiceover like Tevye or instinctively like Golde shaking her head when Tevye tells her that Chava died for them. There are so many different factors and parts to this three-hour piece that I could really talk about, different rising actions, internal conflicts and concepts. The moral of this play and the relationship it has with me is the binding aspect of staying together and the bond of family, love and tradition; give them a sense of community. You shouldn't be blind to your own selfish ways of keeping others happy, but what matters to those you love and true happiness is involved is what matters..
