  • Essay / The role of women in society: over the years - 1221

Modernism is the term for deviation from the norm. In the early 1900s, modernism influenced the role of women in society by providing more opportunities, jobs, and role models for girls in today's society. In the 1920s and 1940s, women were encouraged to get out of the home and work, but on the other hand, women were also encouraged to become stay-at-home mothers. Women should stay at home if they can. However, women should not feel isolated from the rest of the world with household chores and children all day long. In 1920, the 19th Amendment gave women the right to vote. The Equal Rights Amendment, often referred to as the (ERA), was first introduced to Congress in 1923. The amendment was intended to guarantee equal rights and sparked the idea that women should be women at home. Many women left home and became role models for those who chose not to. As these many changes occurred, more and more women began to branch out. In October 1929, the stock market crash occurred and left the American economy in a frenzied state. It was a difficult time for most, if not all, families. Thousands of people have left their homes in search of a better and brighter future. Women, on the other hand, had hope. They were less likely to lose their jobs because most of them worked in gender-segregated departments and made very little money. This suggests a reasoning behind the fact that during this period most women stayed at home. Maybe they were afraid that they would make very little money. They preferred to stay at home and take care of the house. It was the establishment planned for the years to come. Throughout the 1930s, women became an integral part of the community in a variety of different organizations...... middle of paper ...... this began in the 1920s. In 1993, women young girls were introduced as the Ms. Foundation for Women for its first annual Take Our Daughter to Work Day. In 1997 (WNBA), the Women's National Basketball Association was established. The effect of modernism on women in society was powerful. Women came out of their homes to be role models for others. Today, there are more women in the workforce than in the home. With modernism, we have the power to change anything. Works Cited Discovery Education. “Women of the century”.
