In the early 1920s, World War II had just ended and an excited new generation was flocking to the cities. One of the problems of the new generation was their addiction to alcohol. Americans have gotten into the habit of drinking alcohol regularly. The ban was then imposed on major cities that were drinking too much alcohol. There were even towns dedicated to sobriety. Besides the prohibitionists, there were those who were carefree and wild. For example, in The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald portrayed Jay Gatsby as the character of wealth and decadence of the 1920s. He throws large parties, filled with alcohol and food, representing the indulgent excesses of the era. Although Tom is old money and doesn't feel the need to throw extravagant parties, he could if necessary. With alcohol came neglect. Tom believed his money supported his actions, so he took no responsibility for anything he did wrong. The character of Tom is a great example of how the richest of the richest lived in the 1920s.
