Essay / Poetic Narrator of Porphyria's Lover - 1130
Porphyria's LoverPorphyria's Lover is the first short dramatic monologue poem by Robert Browning. It was published in January 1836. This poem deals with the abnormal physiology of humanity, which is why it was very popular during the Victorian era. Because Porphyria's Lover is a unique and gothic poem. The narrator speaks alone in the poem. Therefore, the speaking situation is that of the first person narrator. In this poem, the poet tells how he killed his lover who had a higher standard of living than him. It's about love, obsession and murder. He killed his lover by strangling him with her long hair. It's weird that he says in the poem that this murder is approved by God. The poetic character has a sick psychology in the poem. Which poetic character believes that because of this he killed her, she now belongs to him forever. This is how he perceives love. The poem is complicated but it is easier to read because it is written like a story. The dark atmosphere of the poem reflects the abnormal physiology of the poetic character. The poem begins in the house of an anonymous speaker sitting alone on a stormy night. His lover Porphyria appears sheltered from the rain. She takes off her clothes and begins to light the fireplace. She sits down to comfort her lover. Her lover understands how much she loves him and how much she cares for him. She takes care of him and offers herself to him. So he thinks she's too weak for him to fall in love. He strangles her. He opens her eyes, unties the hair from her neck and spends the rest of his night hugging her corpse. Porphyria's Lover was written with an iambic tentameter. In iambic tentameter, an unstressed syllable follows a stressed syllable. In the poem two...... middle of paper ......th poem. The word emphasized the meaning. This helped the poet complete his rhymes. We can see a simile in verse 43. “Like a closed bud that holds a bee.” The closed eye of Porphyria is compared to a bud. There is a synecdoche in lines 52 and 53. The little pink and smiling head, So happy to have all his will. The “head” represents Porphyria. This referred to the whole. Finally, there is onomatopoeia in line 21. “Whispering how she loved me.” » Porphyria's Lover is one of the poems that I had fun reading and analyzing. The poet has a different writing style. The main themes of love, obsession, and murder made the poem more interesting to read even though it is scary. Robert Browning did a good job of using the right poetic devices in the right places. He used them all when necessary. This inspired me to read his other poems.
