  • Essay / Roderigo's Jealousy - 600

The man named Cassio who was initially given the title of lieutenant ultimately loses his job. Due to Iago's plan which consisted of his "friend", Roderigo befriends Cassio and convinces him to start drinking, leading to Cassio losing his lieutenantship. Iago acts as if he is trying to help Cassio by telling him to confess his evil deeds to Desdemona. He manipulates Cassio into thinking he will get his job back. Iago, however, states in his soliloquy "Myself while I part the moor./And Brick jumps him when he can find Cassio by soliciting his wife./Yes, that's how it is./Don't bore the camera with coldness and delayā€¯ (act 2, sc 3, 405-410). This statement from Iago shows his master plan to not only ruin Cassio's chances of receiving his lieutenancy, but also to tear Othello and Desdemona's marriage apart. This proves that Iago is one of the greatest villains in literature. Iago's skills at deception allowed him to convince Cassio to believe that he was such a kind man, as shown by Cassio's statement "Good night, honest Iago" (act 2, sc 3, 355). This allows Iago to commit his dishonorable acts by causing Cassio trouble. Iago's deceptive skills that lead to Cassio losing his job ultimately make him one of the world's worst villains.
