A registered nurse (RN) is a person who has attended a university or college and studied nursing; then passed the national licensing examination to obtain licensure to practice nursing. The degree earned by a registered nurse based on program requirements is considered a professional nursing degree. The registered nurse is the senior nursing staff and usually works independently. On the other hand, an LPN only earns a practical nursing degree after completing the program. LPNs are mostly only recognized in the United States and Canada; they are also named License Vocational Nurse (LVN) in the state of California and Texas.
