Capacitor Survey ReportPurpose: The purpose of this survey is to study the charging and discharging of capacitors. A capacitor is charged by placing it in a circuit with a resistor and a power source. As electrons flow through the circuit, they cannot pass through the space created by the capacitor. A negative charge builds up on this side of the capacitor while on the other side a positive charge builds up because of it. A potential difference across the gap now occurs, causing the charge to slow down. When the voltage across the gap is equal to the voltage of the supply, there is no current because there is no voltage difference/potential difference and the capacitor is now fully charged. A capacitor can then be used alone in a circuit without a power source, the charge from the capacitor gradually leaves it and discharges. Method: In this experiment, we charged a 1000 μF capacitor and then discharged it using two circuits. We studied the charging of the capacitor using a voltmeter in parallel and a 10 kÎ resistor in series. Every 5 seconds the voltage decreased, we then repeated this process but with the capacitor discharging. Here are the circuits used: [IMAGE] And here are the results: time (s) of charge (V) of discharge (V) of discharge (V))00102.3054.266.281.84106.244.241.44157.842.781.02208.91.980.68259.631.330.293010.140.96-0.043510.50.65-0.434010.720.46-0.784510.870.35-1.055010.990.
