Essay / Rhetorical Appeals and Analysis of Ethical Arguments North. Later, the article was so significant that it was republished in the academic journal Journal of Blacks in Higher Education. In the article "The word 'Nigga' is reserved for slaves and sambos", Rob Nelson uses ethos, logos and above all skillful pathos appeals based on the history of slavery and the illustration of the he future of African Americans, to prove why he thinks the “N-word” is not acceptable. Using an ethical argument and these intelligent appeals, Rob Nelson definitely persuades his young African American audience. “The word “Nigga” is reserved for slaves and sambos” is an ethical argument. The author does not paint the picture he wants to show his audience. It also explains how words change and become in detail. He makes sure his audience understands the history and negative meaning of the word before arguing why they should use it. The author respects his audience as much as he respects himself. None of the words in his writing say "I'm right," "you're wrong," "you should be ashamed of it," but he says it's "a sad contradiction" (Nelson, 1998). When Nelson recounts a specific scene that evokes an image of slavery, he carefully asks the audience to admit his exaggeration immediately afterward. As an African-American, Rob Nelson of course understands other adversary situations. He understands that these African Americans did not use the N-word to demean each other, but that they use it among close friends. He had no intention of criticizing them. Usually the author just wants his audience to see that the overall affection...... middle of article ...... the writer's understanding is implicit in the story and conveyed from imaginative way to the reader. Pathos therefore refers to both the emotional and imaginative impact of the message on the audience, the power with which the writer's message moves the audience to make a decision or take action. Rob Nelson managed to convince his audience. He uses powerful tools of ethos, logos, and pathos appeals to address the value a black man should hold in his heart, and he should not step on his own worth by calling himself a nigger.
