Essay / Effect of environment on culture in Blessing and...
Does environment have effect on culture in the poems “Blessing” by Imtiaz Dharker and “Night of the Scorpion” by Nissim Ezekiel? Consider the poets' attitudes toward both the environment and the culture of the scenes they observe. India ; a place; many cultures. Two poems describing two cultures with the effect affected by the environment. I will study the poems “Blessing” by Imtiaz Dharker and “The Night of the Scorpion” by Nissim Ezekiel and how the environment of the country affects the writing of the poems. I will consider the climate and environment, the people in both environments, the culture, religion and superstitions of the people as well as the sounds, images and styles that poets use to express their ideas. Both of these poems are set in India, where the dry season can reach whopping temperatures of 40 degrees centigrade. In the poem “Blessing,” this is shown in the first two lines where it says, “The skin cracks like a pod/There is never enough water.” Both of these lines are blunt, factual statements. From here we can immediately see what kind of environment the poem takes place in. “The skin cracks like a pod” tells us that people suffer from severe dehydration because their skin cracks when it should be moist and supple. It’s a simile that compares our skin to something that has died like a pod that shrivels. The second line "There's never enough water" simply tells us about the way they live. This tells us that wherever they go, they may find water, but it will never be enough for the whole family, much less the community. The environment of “The Night of the Scorpion” is, however, very contrasting. Here we have the same place but during the rainy season but this rain has...... middle of paper ......hem negative feeling in the whole community. Finally, this is a use of juxtaposition because they say God in a positive and religious form, but the narrator thought the exact opposite because they sound boring and like flies. In conclusion, I think that the environment has an effect on the culture and lifestyle of people because it would determine their way of living but also their religions. This is because they would all have their own superstitions and then have religions coming from them saying that a god brought them a "blessing", like in the poem "Blessing". Both poems are written in the same place but in different ways due to the environment therefore having a different season; rain and dry. This would then determine what they do at that time and how they deal with their beliefs and superstitions..
