Asif Jordan once said: “Beneath the surface of contradiction lies similarity. » Authors often use the idea of contradiction to highlight similarities between people or places. Just looking at two places, they seem extremely different. In truth, they are generally different, but deal with largely the same core story issues. Alan Paton uses this idea in Cry, the Beloved Country when he outlines the characteristics of Ndotsheni and Johannesburg. Paton describes South Africa's actions by showing both a rural and urban environment to contrast the views of the two locations. Paton's aim in writing his novel was to show South Africa the actions it was taking. To do this, he had to contrast urban life and rural life. For the story, he chose the town of Ndotsheni and the city of Johannesburg. These two places are described differently, but you can see later how they face some of the same problems. Ndotsheni is a simple place made up of mostly black people. These people live for their tribe and for the lives of their neighbors...
