    Steinberg (2013) clearly defines academic success in one of three ways: academic performance which refers to the grades students achieve in school, academic success which is attributed to the academic success of students. performance on their standardized tests or educational attainment that illustrates the number of years of schooling students complete (p. 397). Many factors contribute to students' academic success, one of them being family. As the family is the main source of informal education for a child, the family unit can be considered to play a considerable role in the child's academic success (Sumari, Hussin & Siraj, 2010). The family can be considered as a unit composed of individuals related by blood, marriage or adoption (Franklin, 1990-1991). The importance of the family as a social institution crucial to the well-being of society and the individual is highlighted in the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights of 1966. It states that "the protection and the widest possible assistance should be given to the family, which is the natural and fundamental group of society.” Urie Bronfenbrenner's famous bioecological model conceptualizes the environment as a set of nested structures – microsystem, mesosystem, macrosystem exosystem and chronosystem in which each structure exerts a distinct level of influence on children's development. The child participates directly in activities, roles and relationships in the microsystem which involves interaction with family, peers, teachers and in places such as schools, church, neighborhood playground and the sports club. This participation has a significant direct influence on the lives of children (Bronfenbrenner, 1979). The family factor such as parental expectations seems to have a huge impact on children's academic success. As Bronfenbrenner's bioecological model illustrates, the family has a direct influence on the lives of children. Schools should encourage parents to be actively involved in their children's education by emphasizing the importance of supporting them and having high expectations for their children's academic achievement. The government, through its policy, should provide monetary support to poor families to reduce poverty and improve their socio-economic status. Research shows that parents with higher socioeconomic status have higher expectations for their children's academic success, which leads to academic success in school..
