  • Essay / Stereotypes against Muslims due to terrorist attacks around the world

    Muslims are among the many Muslims who face discrimination based on their religion due to events in the past and still effects in today's society. Events such as 9/11 and the attack on the Pentagon, caused by Al-Qaeda. After this event, Americans began targeting more Muslims based on their religion, which is a form of generalization. By discriminating against these people's religion, Americans have begun to stereotype Muslims because Americans are intimidated by Muslims following the events of September 11, 2001. The religion that most Muslims believe in is Islamic, a religion in which they believe that there is only one God, Allah. ; the Arabic word for god (dictionary, 2014). This religion is the second largest religion in the world with 1 billion followers (BBC, 2014). Just like Christians or Catholics, Muslims have a book of laws like the Bible, it is called the Koran but they also have the Sunnah. These two books form the basis of the practice and beliefs of Islam. The Sunnah is the traditional part of Muslim law based on the words and deeds of Muhammad and preserved in traditional literature (dictionary, 2014). Muhammad was the first to found the religion of Islam, accepted by Muslims around the world as the last of God's prophets (Britannia). Additionally, the Sunnah contains the five fundamental pillars of Islam. These are the most important practices of the religion because they are the obligations that every Muslim must comply with in order to live a good and responsible life; according to Islam (BBC, 2014).
