These were the first two states to be admitted to the United States. John Adams and Thomas Jefferson served their presidential terms in the late 1700s and early 1800s. Many more states are added and life continues in America for about 60 more years and there is a separation in the nation. Abraham Lincoln is the president during this period of civil war. The Civil War consisted of several wars between the northern and southern states of the same country, America. The north side was free land, African Americans were not held as slaves. The South Side had laws that made African Americans slaves. The 20th century is marked by many inventions that benefit the human way of life. Alaska and Hawaii were the last two states to enter America. The addition of these two states gives rise to the newest and improved American flag. Our nation's flag is based on our 50 states. The 4th of July is celebrated every year, when we usually see red, white and blue. This can be considered patriotism! Americans celebrate and enjoy each other's company. Some sit near a fire and others have fun watching fireworks. The flag is celebrated and is a symbol of freedom. This flag was adopted in 1777, when there were only thirteen colonies.
