Depression and suicide among college studentsDepression and suicidal thoughts have become a growing problem among today's college students and are affecting their academic performance and social performance. Students who struggle with depression will face multiple problems and some will even commit suicide. There are many causes for the depression that college students face, but there is no specific medication that can completely cure a person. There are many reasons why a student would be depressed, but sometimes the student will not show any signs of depression. However, students will exhibit some symptoms that indicate they might be depressed. Some of the symptoms include fatigue, angry outbursts; loss of interest in normal activities and difficulty concentrating (college depression). One of the major problems with depression is that if left untreated or undetected, it can lead to suicide, which is the second leading cause of death among college students today (Snyder). The causes of depression in students vary among students but, in general, there are some of the reasons why students feel depressed. One of the main reasons is that for most students, this is the first time they have lived away from home and missed their family and friends. For other students, making new friends at university can be a challenge and it can be extremely difficult if they don't make any friends within the first few weeks. When students who were straight-A students in high school find themselves unable to repeat that in college, it can lead to major depression.
