The Yorktown, an American aircraft carrier, was attacked by Japanese bombers and planes that had escaped the attack ("Battle of Midway"). These fighters were dispatched from the Hiryu, the only remaining large Imperial aircraft carrier (Battle of Midway: June 4-7, 1942). But, in the end, the Americans still gained the upper hand as the last ship was wiped out shortly after ("Battle of Midway"). One of the most important confrontations of the Second World War was decisively won by the Allies. From this point on, the Allies took the lead in the Pacific and in the seas in general.
