  • Essay / Orientalism and 47 Ronin - 1024

Cinema is one of the many media that send messages to the world. There are many examples of films that insert messages, 47 Ronin is one of them. The 47 Ronin movie is based on the true story of the Ako incident and specifically tells us that honor is everything. The image we are discussing in the presentation is from the movie 47 Ronin. The image is a representation of a specific Japanese culture, Seppuku. However, there are differences in the history of the Ako Incident and 47 Ronin, and these modifications apply to the term Orientalism. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, the first evidence of the use of the word orientalism dates back to 1769 (Merriam Webster). In general, Orientalism is an imitation or representation of Eastern culture made by Western people. A simple example is Fortune cookies, they are made by Westerners but they imitate the eccentricity of the Asian desert. Furthermore, Orientalism is also explained in the book “Orientalism” written by Edward Said, a Palestinian specialist in post-colonialism. In this book, Edward Said explains the history and culture of Asia, Africa, and the Middle East, and he also explains Orientalism more briefly in this book. Said believes that orientalism has explicit and implicit sides. Said wrote that, connotatively, Orientalism is a tool for the West to exert political influence in the East, meaning: "It evokes the authoritarian executive attitude of 19th-century European colonialism and from the beginning of the 20th century. » (Said, 2). This is the whole point of the book “Orientalism”. Additionally, Said also wrote: "Orientalism is a style of thinking based on an ontological and epistemological distinction made between 'the Orient' and (mostly) 'the West.' Thus a very large mass of writers, among whom are poets, n...... middle of paper ......supposed to look. I guess Hollywood made such a visual appearance to give us that the Samurai have a modern and fashionable look, like Kai's hair. It also applies to the term orientalism since it attempts to imitate the visual history of the samurai. In conclusion, 47 Ronin is a film that imitates the culture and history of samurai in Japan. The film is therefore linked to the general term of orientalism and the term orientalism that Edward Said explained in his book. Works Cited “Orientalism”. Merriam-Webster.com.
