Computer EngineeringComputer Engineering is a relatively new field of engineering and one of the fastest growing fields today. Computer engineering is one of the most technological jobs today (Basta 71). The field of computer engineering combines electrical and computer engineering knowledge to create advanced computer systems. Computer engineering involves the process of designing and manufacturing computer chip processors, memory systems, central processing units, and peripheral devices. Computer engineers work with CAD (computer-aided design) programs and different computer languages so they can create and program computer systems (Gelenter 82). Computer engineers use the best technology of today to create the technology of tomorrow. Computer engineers need a high level of education and intelligence to be competent in their work. A bachelor's degree from a college or university with a good computer engineering program and a computer science program is necessary (Basta 71). Then, once employed, they typically complete an on-the-job training program to learn certain types of systems that will be designed and manufactured. Computer engineers mainly study conventional electronic engineering, computer science and mathematics at university. The electrical engineering knowledge that a computer engineer possesses allows them to understand the devices that go into a computer so that they can be designed and built (UCSD 2). The computer science part gives an engineer much-needed knowledge of how software runs a computer system and performs tasks. There are different types of employers that computer engineers could work for today. The first concerns a large IT company that designs complete computer systems, for example Compaq or Macintosh. Next are those that work for computer components such as peripheral systems and microchips such as Intel (Gelenter 90). Then it's engineers who design everyday electronic components such as ATMs and cell phones. The job outlook for computer engineering is very good. More and more computer systems are being created every day and the demand for computer engineers will continue to grow (UCSD 1). For example, Chris Kolnik (who is studying to become a computer engineer) says that growth in the computer industry is not in sight..
