Essay / Starry Night over the Rhône – Vincent Van Gogh
Art has existed for hundreds of thousands of years. Throughout history, many artists have made their mark on the art world, but one is particularly popular and well-known among art lovers. Vincent Van Gogh is one of the most famous artists of all time and his paintings have become extremely well known and popular among art collectors. Throughout his life, he painted hundreds of different paintings, but there is one painting he is best known for: Starry Night over the Rhône. Starry Night over the Rhône is an oil painting done on canvas. Vincent Van Gogh painted it in September 1888 in Arles, France. Currently, the painting is kept at the Musée d'Orsay, located in Paris, France, Europe. Vincent Van Gogh's artwork is a well-crafted masterpiece that captivates his style very well. As a result, his use of dense brushstrokes, visible hues that reflect on the water, and an overall perspective that conveys an organic yet untamed view of nature. Vincent Van Gogh's style is defined by the abundant brushstrokes seen in all of his paintings. These brushstrokes highlight the main subject of a majority of his paintings which is nature. The texture of Starry Night over the Rhone is what gives the work an organic feel. Vincent Van Gogh did a great job handling the medium. Since the backing is canvas, it is very tightly woven and compact. He does a superb job of using thick brushstrokes that allow the work to really stand out. The surface is not smooth, but rather textured like lightly sanded paper. The texture is already rough because of the canvas support; However, these thick brushstrokes define the texture even more, making the artwork truly middle of paper......ter. His emphasis on nature and organicism is illustrated through the de-emphasis of the couple and the boats. The down-to-earth tone created by the combination of elements is beautiful as it simply shows the effort and time Vincent Van Gogh put into creating this highly sought-after work of art. Starry Night Over the Rhône will forever remain one of the most distinguished, sought-after and popular works of art in the world, and it's all thanks to the one and only Vincent Van Gogh.
