The work of art I chose to analyze for this article was found at the Oakland Museum of California. The painting is titled Figure and was created by Otis Oldfield in 1933. The painting depicts a woman leaning against a table in her home, somewhat provocatively, wearing only her underwear. The woman's back is also turned towards the viewer, revealing very little detail of her face. This painting caught my attention because it was quite different from the other neighboring paintings. Placed among other depictions of life in the early 1900s, Figure was the only portrait-style painting depicting a half-naked woman. Although this painting is quite different from other nearby paintings, the simple simplicity of the figure also makes it a wonderful work of art. Regarding the shape of the figure, several different elements are visible in this painting. The lines are very regular and defined. Because of this, you can easily distinguish the woman and the other objects in the painting. The shapes are very geometric in relation to the painting and the background of the painting. However, the woman's shape is quite organic. Her body shows her natural curves and looks very realistic. When it comes to the color of this painting, the colors are both warm and cool. The dark, cool background contrasts quite dramatically with the orange colors of the woman's skin and her underwear. The woman's skin is depicted in warm yellow and orange tones and her underwear is a simple white color. The texture of this paint is very smooth and the paint is mixed well, there are no chunks or thick layers of paint. Regarding the scale of the painting, the size and relationship of the woman to the background is realistic and proportionate. However, it is obvious that in middle of paper ......treatment on female sexuality, Oldfield leaves the observer with many ideas for interpreting this painting. The figure is a beautiful painting of an everyday woman in everyday life. Its unique qualities and simplicity set it apart from other paintings on display at the museum. Although Otis Oldfield has not been clear about his intentions for this piece, I like that he allows the viewer to interpret the meaning. I also admire his courage in releasing this work despite the controversy caused by the female nudity. Without artists like Otis Oldfield who challenged social norms and had the courage to publish controversial works of art, the art world would lack variety and diversity. Overall, although a simple painting, Figure allows the viewer to interpret its meaning(s) in many ways and admire the beauty of the female body..
