Important Religions of the Hellenistic EraWith the formation of Hellenistic civilization, new forms of religion appeared. Stoicism, Epicureanism, and skepticism came into play for those who were considered intellectuals. While those who are less philosophically inclined choose to worship fortune or turn to the more emotive religions of Eastern origin. The Orphic and Eleusinian mystery cults were more popular than ever, while the worship of Isis, the Egyptian mother goddess, seemed for a time almost to become a world religion. Stoicism was the belief that emotions were due solely to error in judgment. and those who were true intellectuals would be able to renounce all emotion. They believed that all things, including God and the soul, were material, because they felt that to have true pairs, body and soul, God and the world, both had to be the same substance.
