Nelson Mandela was the first black president of South Africa. By the time Nelson Mandela was at university, he was a tall, good-natured young man. His laugh came easily and he was very intelligent. He was also an excellent athlete. During his second year of university, he participated in a student strike to protest poor living conditions at the school. When he refused to apologize to school authorities, he was expelled. This was Nelson's first real experience of standing up to authority. After being expelled from school, Nelson traveled to Johannesburg, the "City of Gold." Everything was wonderful because it was a wealthy city, but the beautiful parks, theaters and schools were only for the use of white residents, like all other black people in Johannesburg.
