The DiscoveryThe Oak Island Silver Pit was discovered in the summer of 1795 by Daniel McGinnis. He was drawn to the island by strange lights visible from his house. During his investigation, he comes across a block and tackle hanging directly above a circular indentation on the island floor. Daniel, accompanied by two of his friends John Smith and Anthony Vaughan, began digging this bizarre pit. Their curiosity is due to the fact that this period is the height of the "golden age of piracy (Maritime Museum of the Atlantic)". Hoping to find treasure, Daniel and his friends were the first in a long line of people to take over the Oak Island Money Pit. After two attempts, their fascination grew stronger as they discovered layers of man-made obstacles, giving them confidence that there was buried treasure. Unfortunately, the boys dug 35 feet before defeat set in and they abandoned their dig.
