In the 1960s, almost half of the American population was young adults. Because of this, the sixties were a time of youth and there was a generation gap that America had never seen before. Many baby boomers were at risk of being drafted into the Vietnam War. This war gave birth to revolutionary and innovative ways of thinking. The young people of this decade wanted change, which led to a huge difference in culture compared to the conservative fifties. The inspiration for many songs and lyrics of the era came from the Vietnam War. The war caused many people to protest and talk about it. The main genres people used to express their attitude towards the current war were folk and rock. Hippies used music to express themselves spiritually, emotionally, and politically. The hippie movement emerged around the same time as the Vietnam War. It was a celebration of youth, love, peace and individuality. So it's natural that hippies wouldn't agree with the Vietnam War. They adopted the slogan "make love, not war", which summed up their beliefs in matters of peace. During the hippie movement, draft cards and American flags were burned to express dissatisfaction with the American government and its ideals. They also showed their rebellion against the war by demonstrating and singing anti-war songs at rallies. Students, along with hippies, organized anti-war rallies at many colleges across America. The large number of baby boomers currently enrolled in college has increased student activism. It is often said that the anti-war movement was a major factor affecting America's involvement in the war. These anti-war rallies most often had musicians performing songs to support their anti-war message.
