Gender EqualityGender equality is an issue in constant conflict within the societies of Eastern and Western countries. Although Vietnamese women living in the United States have equal access to employment and education and are able to be independent, they nevertheless choose to "integrate the new realities of their lives within the ideological confines of the system traditional family” (Kibria 109). Tradition dictates that women are the support system for the principles and values of the traditional Vietnamese family system (137). While Vietnamese women are more reserved and submissive to their husbands, Vietnamese-American women have discovered the strength and power of being the central figure within the newly defined collective household in order to survive and provide for their children. . According to Confucianism, the family line is patriarchal and man must be obeyed. Women were expected to respect the three principles: her father, her husband and her eldest son; otherwise, the consequences would be serious. Asking women to stay home with children is a way of life in major Asian countries. In Asia, a woman does not want to and cannot leave her parents' home until she is married, then she will live with and take care of her husband's family. A single woman living alone would be considered disgraceful and shameful to her family in Asian culture. Unlike the strict traditional methods of Confucianism, Vietnamese families are orderly and emotional (Freeman 88). Within the traditional Vietnamese family, “disciplined authority and obligation to the father, but also nurturing, feelings, and affection are associated with the mother” (89). Asian women, in general, are taught to be reserved and keep their thoughts and experiences private in order to avoid losing face and embarrassing the family; however, "more respect for the rights and powers of Vietnamese women" contributed to an inclusive Vietnamese history of strong, intelligent and decisive women such as the Truong sisters who fought and defeated the Chinese to regain Vietnam's independence in 40 AD. Traditional femininity must be expressed through fashions of dress, movements, speech and actions; to some extent, this is also true for Asian-American women in modern society. Although the shy behavior of traditional Asian women led to a lack of individuality and self-confidence, Asian-American women began to shed the belief in destiny, destined misery, and strove to say what what they think.
