  • Essay / The Debate Over Legalization and Taxation of Marijuana

"If the words "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" do not include the right to experiment with your own conscience, then the Declaration of Independence does not not worth the hemp it was written on it.” Terence McKenna said this. Although the legalization and taxation of marijuana causes some problems, increases wages, and causes more drunk driving and/or accidents, it also has many benefits. I support the legalization of marijuana for several reasons. I agree that there are downsides to legalizing marijuana, but again, most of the problems will only last a few weeks or months. Taxing marijuana will bring in billions of dollars the government has been losing for years. These billions of dollars in tax revenue can help pay down the U.S. debt. The number of drunk driving cases has increased in the two states that have legalized recreational marijuana. Although this is self-explanatory. The first year of legalization or lowering the age for anything is always difficult and less safe than subsequent years. America saw it with alcohol. If you look at the percentage of driving under the influence, drunk driving is still a few percentages higher than driving under the influence of alcohol. I agree that driving under the influence of drugs like marijuana can cause horrible accidents. People think they are good drivers, saying they are more alert and drive much slower. which is not the case. It is also much more difficult to spot someone who is under the influence of marijuana in this case. All of these problems can be resolved or brought down to an acceptable level. “Marijuana and other illegal drugs are easier for teens to obtain and consume than alcohol. » (David Boaz) This in itself solves a huge problem. Many studies show that people are... middle of paper... older » (Krayewski) Selling marijuana and taxing it will raise problems, solve them and probably cause some chaos for a few days, but with caution . by thinking and planning, I believe it will benefit our country in many ways. First reason, it will help solve health problems, but, more importantly, reduce the country's debt. This is why I agree with the literature on marijuana legalization cited by Farrell, Michael B.
