In Sharon Olds' poem, "35/10", a story is told in which the writer speaks through the mother. The poem was about a mother, perhaps a little envious of her daughter. The title of the poem symbolizes the ages of the mother and daughter, the mother being 35 years old and the daughter 10 years old. I feel like the writer is using imagery when she talks about the mother brushing her daughter's hair. I visualize the mother and daughter sitting in the girl's bedroom, in front of a white dressing table, brushing their hair. Looking at her daughter in the mirror, the mother realizes that as she gets older and perhaps less attractive, her daughter begins to blossom into beautiful, young women. Sharon Olds' poem is composed of an 18-line stanza. The speaker's tone changes at the end of the poem. At the beginning of "35/10," I sense a jealous vibe from the speaker, the 35-year-old mother, when she notices her daughter's shiny, silky hair and sees the gray fading into her own hair.
